This web site was created as the class project for the 2016 FLARE (Faculty-Led Academic Research Experience) course "Living History: A Foray into Archival Research and Digital Public History."

Abstract: Adelicia Acklen: A Case Study in Modern Womanhood is a digital exhibit on Adelicia Acklen, a nineteenth-century Nashville socialite, philanthropist, and businesswoman. The students in "Living History" - a Faculty-Led Academic Research Experience at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee have researched aspects of Adelicia Acklen's life, contextualizing her nineteenth-centure Nashville world, the state of Tennessee, and the south more broadly. After touring Belmont Mansion, Adelicia Acklen's summer home in Nashville, students worked with the staff at Belmont Mansion and conducted research in the Mansion's collections, the Tennessee State Library and Archives collections, and resources at the Nashville Public Library. This long-term project enabled students to receive "on-the-ground" experience as historians as they learned to navigate library and archives holdings, how to deal with research roadblocks, how to track down leads, and strategies to overcome writing and stylistic struggles. The website contains various "collections" of the semeter's work, including research papers, project bibliographies, photographs, and historical images.
